End of the Year

So this was definitely not what I expected for my internship my senior year. Originally, I wasn't even sure where to go for my internship or what career I wanted to study. I ended up settling on Nursing and was placed in Holy Name and Mountainside Hospital. During my time at Holy Name, I learned how to be in a hospital environment and saw behind the scenes of discharging someone, admitting them, or putting them into observation. This was not nursing practice but it was still interesting for me to experience. In Mountainside, however, I scanned papers that were old tests from previous student nurses and was able to experience a simulation lab where residents try to determine a patient's disease from symptoms and previously drawn test labs. That was very interesting, and I wish we were able to see more of them. In January, however, Holy Name stopped all interns from coming if you were under the age of 18 because of the flu so I was forced to stay in school, and I stopped going

February!!

This month was interesting because I am still continuing on the website project for the school. I even talked during the meeting explaining my thoughts and concerns with it. I am really grateful for this experience because it is teaching me how to be in a meeting-like setting and how to communicate with other people who have different ideas. Mrs. Colangelo has also put me to work organizing her files because since she has so many classes, she does not have enough organization for everything. I don't mind organizing so it's pretty fun to see all the lesson plans she does for each class and the work she has for them all. I also still help around the classes and help the kids with some art and measuring if I can which I enjoy. Recently, Mrs. Colangelo has taught be how to use Adobe Illustrator to make posters for different things and people for the school. I love learning about new editing and creation programs and now that I know, I will be able to help her with those types o

January!!

This month has been a lot different than the others because I am no longer interning at Holy Name Hospital. There was a flu outbreak and anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed to be in the hospital and I'm 17 so we had to find another place for me to go fast. My one teacher, Mrs. Colangelo always needs help with everything so we decided that I could probably help her out and I love it. She gives me things to do like framing artwork, making plans, and lets me participate in her meetings. I also create promo videos for her classes to show to prospective students. I love editing and creating videos and I am now re-evaluating my future career choices. I never thought about being an art teacher or going into the art field but now I am reconsidering. I enjoy my new internship because I am able to see the behind-the-scenes of teaching and what goes on in school. Recently I was included in a meeting for designing the new school website and it was my responsibility to pick the format a

November!!

This month was much more exciting than October because I was able to experience a simulation lab at Mountainside. The residents came in and had to figure out a mysterious disease that the "patient" was having. It was very informative and exciting to see them work through the case and figure it out together. It really helped me see what a real experience would probably look like and it made me excited for my future career. We even sat in on the consult after the case to get an "inside look" to the simulation and their thinking behind how they were able to figure it out. It was really fun and I hope I can do another one soon. On the other days at Mountainside, we focused mainly on scanning documents and at Holy Name, I am going to start calling the insurance companies to gain information for the hospital. Overall, it was a really fun month and I'm excited for December!

October Blog!!

My primary job at both Holy Name Medical and Mountainside Hospital is to arrange and put together orientation booklets for the new employees and nurses. At Holy Name, I intern in the Transitional Care Unit that deals with paperwork that needs to be given to the patients. I print out the table of contents and arrange them to create the booklets for the new workers for transitional care. For Mountainside, I do something very similar but also at times, the other interns and I go through the files of nurses from years ago and scan them if they are still working in the hospital. Starting in November, however, on Thursdays at Holy Name, I am going to be assigned to a nursing unit where I would get patient contact and learn how to interact with them which I am looking forward to because that is what I would like to be doing in the future.
