End of the Year

So this was definitely not what I expected for my internship my senior year. Originally, I wasn't even sure where to go for my internship or what career I wanted to study. I ended up settling on Nursing and was placed in Holy Name and Mountainside Hospital. During my time at Holy Name, I learned how to be in a hospital environment and saw behind the scenes of discharging someone, admitting them, or putting them into observation. This was not nursing practice but it was still interesting for me to experience. In Mountainside, however, I scanned papers that were old tests from previous student nurses and was able to experience a simulation lab where residents try to determine a patient's disease from symptoms and previously drawn test labs. That was very interesting, and I wish we were able to see more of them.

In January, however, Holy Name stopped all interns from coming if you were under the age of 18 because of the flu so I was forced to stay in school, and I stopped going to Mountainside as well. I did start interning with the Art teacher, Mrs. Colangelo though. I really liked interning for her because teaching and nursing have similar properties when it comes to explaining, asserting, politeness, and kindness. She also taught me not to be scared of the crowd and how to work certain editing apps. Although it wasn't Nursing, I learned that I want to become a Pediatric Nurse instead of an adult nurse because I like working with younger people better.

Overall, I will never forget my first day at Holy Name where I got to experience the Nurses Station and go into patient's rooms to see if they needed anything and help out the nurses as well. For Mountainside, that simulation lab is something that will stay with me for a while because it was so interesting to see the doctors determine the patient's disease. Moreover, working with Mrs. Colangelo was an unforgettable experience as well because I was able to learn about behind-the-scenes of the classroom, school projects, and designing. I really wish I was able to have more hands-on experience at the hospitals, but overall, it was a nice experience and I'm glad I participated in the program because it helped me see that I want to become a Pediatric Nurse!
